These estimates are daily composites of all available passive microwave precipitation estimates from the SSM/I instrument aboard the F-13 DMSP polar orbiter. The original orbital estimates are generated by FNMOC and combined by NESDIS using the following published algorithm (sometimes referred to as the SSMI EDR algorithm or the Ferraro/Grody Algorithm):
