Detecting Algal Blooms From Space

The ability to detect and identify the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton from space has many applications that include elucidating the role of plankton in biogeochemical cycling and mitigating the affects of their presence. Currently, only blooms of a few taxa of phytoplankton can be identified from space.

The methods employed to detect these species are under development. The resulting maps are experimental and should be interpreted with caution.

Background information and presence/absence maps are available for the following species:

Emiliania huxleyi - Coccolithophorid

Karenia brevis - Dinoflagellate
